Dear Journal,
Today's Flying Class was a disaster!
I met up with Adair for our first Flying quiz of the semester. My stomach was fluttering with nervous butterflies, and
I wasn't looking forward to making a fool of myself in front of my whole class. I've gotten better at flying, but I still
wish that I could fly like Adair. He makes it look so easy sometimes. Anyway, after Mr. Flight started class, we got to practice
for a little while before we began the actual quiz. I practiced my flips really close to the ground, because I'm still not
able to do them very well. They make me the most nervous out of all of the moves we've learned.
Then the time came for the quiz. Zoey went first, and she didn't do too well. She fell off of her broom in the middle
of her flip! Zoey barely was able to grab onto her broom's handle before she came falling down to the ground. Mr. Flight whizzed
up into the air to save her. She was sure lucky that he got to her in time. I kept covering my eyes, afraid that her hands
would slide off of her broom and she'd come tumbling down to the lawn. Zoey was so embarrassed. She wouldn't talk to any of
us for the rest of the quiz time. I felt bad for her, but I was so nervous about doing my moves, it was hard for me to
spend time trying to get her to talk.
When my turn came, my stomach felt like it was going to fall through me and onto the grass. My mouth was dry, and my
hands were sweaty and shaking. I mounted my broom and kicked off into the air. I hovered there for a moment, nervously awaiting
Mr. Flight's instructions. He told me to start with a Reversing Swoop. I had practiced that a bunch of times, but for a split
second, I forgot what it was. I looked down to the lawn and Adair gave me a thumbs-up. That made me feel better, so I took
a breath and started the swoop. After I completed that, I looked down and saw Mr. Flight writing something in his notes. I
was hoping it was a good grade, but I couldn't tell. Then, I had to do some Loopy Loops, a nose-dive, fly over the trees and
back to the lawn, and also fly up over the tips of the castle and back down. That last move made me kind of nervous, because
I almost smashed into the tip of the top tower.
Once I was done those, I silently wished that I would be finished. But then, Mr. Flight yelled out for me to do a Floppy
Flip. That's when my heart sank again. I took a deep breath and started the flip. As I began the actual flip, I started to
smile. It was actually happening! I was doing it! But then, when I was upside down, I swore I saw this crazy bird flying at
my head. The bird practically flew right into my face! I swatted at it, and it squawked at me! It squawked at ME! That
dumb bird was in MY way, not the other way around! He had a whole sky that he could be flying in. I was in the middle of my
first Flying quiz!! Couldn't he move??? Anyway, my hat fell off, the bird flew away, and I was starting to slip.
For an instant, I looked down to Mr. Flight, thinking he'd be rushing up to save me, but he wasn't even looking! He was writing
something in his notebook!! I quickly swung my leg up and pulled myself onto the right side of my broom. I don't even know
how I did it. It was one of the scariest moments ever.
I then began to float back down to the lawn. Mr. Flight was congratulating me on my save. So he did know what had happened!
He was testing me! I couldn't believe it. I could have broken my neck! Once I had landed, Adair and my other friends came
over to me and were patting my back, hugging me, and telling me that I had done an amazing job. I grabbed my hat and stuffed
it back on my head. All I knew was that if I ever saw that stupid bird again, he was dead meat!!!
Your friend,
Maude Sinks
